I just happened upon this while searching for images of Stephens work. My wife and I bought one of his paintings of a Montreal scene a few years ago during the Pontiac Artists tour and I was just enjoying looking at it as I so often do. Very sorry to hear of his passing. Glad to have met him and to share the joy that he gave to others through his art. God bless.

Stephan Scrak was my Uncle Stevie. He was a teenager and I was a little girl and his eldest niece. He lived with us...my mom is his big sister and I loved him so much! He always had time for my constant chatter, he talked to me like a person, not a kid, and he listened to me, which is a rare gift on its own and reason for sainthood in my case.
He used to listen to the radio at night while he slept, he said he needed the music to fall asleep. But when the station signed off late at night the white noise would wake me. It scared me senseless because I thought I could hear voices in it. I told uncle Stevie, and he stopped listening to the radio. I was a little girl but I understood the sacrifice he made for me. And I loved him for it! I worked up my courage a few weeks later and told him i wasnt scared anymore. He looked me in the eye and said "bull!". And refused to put the radio back on. I felt so guilty! And he let me, for a whole week til he finally fessed up that he had an ear phone! I was so mad i punched him and he tickled me til i begged mercy!
My uncle had such love and compassion. Every time I was sick or hurt or in the hospital, even though hed long moved far away from me, hed write me long, long letters, chatting, telling me about his life, his dreams, giving me advice when I was in my teens and 20s and later telling of his life and loves. I always wanted a painting...any one..it didnt matter to me...I wanted it just because he painted it as much as for his incredible talent. He always promised hed send me one but never quite got around to it which I understand, life gets complicated and busy, but I was so proud of his gift, his beautiful talent! He took me to knoebles grove - an amusement park in Pennsylvania and spent the day with me and his boyfriend, the two of them catering to my 11 year old selfs every wish. We kept in touch by phone and email when we could....but not nearly as often as we should have. I regret that so much. My Uncle Stevie was my hero, back then and right now. I am so glad he found his place, his art, his passion. I love you Uncle Stevie, I will hold you in my heart forever.
Kimber

To Stephens family ,friends and his artist family, Was deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Stephen s passing. When I hear his name, memories of all kinds come to mind. His beautiful art work, his interesting shop, his lovely home in CB, his animals, Stephen riding his bike, his visits to pick crab apples and his talks about his country and the way he made hi crab apple jelly and it goes on and on. He had such a kind and gentle soul.wish he had made the painting as I described it but on my last visit he still hadnt had the time..but I have several cards of his that I consider framing. His memory lives on and he will be forever remembered by all who knew him. Rest in peace Stephen.May God hold you in the palm of His hands. Lisette Racine

Early 80s were my first sighting of SS in Montreal... Tall, dark and handsome -with a twinkle in his eye and an unassuming, gentle, very funny way about him. He was accomplished in so many fields - cook extraordinaire, baker, host, farmer, "Mother Goose" (!), comic, artist - but, above all, a loyal and loving friend. A brother of my choosing. No matter that we lived far apart geographically, we were always close to each other in spirit and affection. I will miss his voice, his physicality but he is with me always, in my heart and my mind. And with me, too, every time I look up and see one of his joyful, colourful, spirited paintings enlivening my home. Bless you Sweet Stephen and may you now always be free and at peace.

Stephen, my brother, and I have been separated by countries for many years. However, that did not keep us from connecting and having a loving relationship. I looked forward to his telephone calls-which would have been on his birthday, the day of his funeral, or mine two days later. As kids I was the older sister by a few years and remember many good times with him. I loved him as the sweet affectionate boy he was and loved him as the gentle, caring man he became. Losing a sibling is hard, as if a part of me is missingan important part. I think of him at odd moments and then remember he is gone; and I cry.
Stil, I know he is in Heavens realms, looking down upon me and all those he cared for so deeplyand it brings me some peace. I often thought his paintings were otherworldly. Perhaps Heaven is the place where they belong. Stephan will not miss us long for there is no time in heaven, but to those who loved him it might seem forever before we meet again.
I love you, Stevie,
Your sister, Micki

Stephan came into our lives in 2000 when he moved to Vinton. We shared in his joy of all of the animals he surrounded himself with, the horses, the goats, the cats, the dog, the geese, the chickens and the rooster. There were many enjoyable days of painting together. After several years we were fortunate to have him for our neighbor in Campbells Bay with his dog and cats. We shared back yards, flowers, vegetables, many wonderful meals and a lot of time painting together. When he moved to Portage Du Fort a couple of years ago we were sorry to see him go but happy that he was able to realize his wish to open a shop for his art and his many antiques and collectibles. We still had wonderful days painting en plein air. Stephan always had dreams for the future, he made friends wherever he lived and we are all the better for having shared a few of those years with him. We will miss him and we will not forget him. R.I.P.

Dear friend,
I cherish all the precious moments spent together. First, in Montreal during our numerous shopping spree and then later on, in the Pontiac, an area you loved, when we visited Giant Tiger and several yard sales. You are part of my life every day since I own two of your paintings. I love you for your artistic talent, curiosity, honesty and sense of humor. Ill remember the "Can we talk about me, now ?"
