Such sad news to hear of Dan’s passing. The first time I met Dan was when he showed up unexpectedly at the cottage only to take and lose my grandfather’s fishing pole – yes the whole pole – up the river at the falls. Now I’d heard many stories about Dan and his multitude of escapades; some made you laugh hysterically, others made you just shake your head in amazement. None however warned me nearly enough about the rude, obnoxious and misogynistic jerk that just showed up in the midst of our family vacation. The first thing he said upon being introduced was, ‘Oh good, the little woman’s here to wash my shorts.’ I was not impressed. Everything that came out of his mouth made me want to punch him; I was so happy when he finally left. Move forward in time and, oh goody, Dan and his new wife and daughter were coming to spend some time at the lake with us. Ugh, the dread. Believe me when I say that I cannot express the shock and amazement at the man that arrived this time around. Dan was a changed man, it was as simple as that and the reason for it was undeniable. Dan was in love, happy and relaxed. He absolutely glowed when he talked about his life with Vickie and he simply adored Cass. I was in awe of the woman that managed to tame Dan. Don’t get me wrong, he was still mischievous as all get out, insisting on teasing ‘Booger’ and playing pranks which lured my daughter Shyla in whole heartedly. She spent the summer having some hilarious conversations with Dan - who will always be lovingly referred to as Uncle Dip Dip – at their daily chips and dip meetings. Me, I have had some great conversations with Dan over the years and can’t thank him enough for trying to help my hubby, keeping things in perspective and supporting my kids and I over the years. I am still amazed by the relationship we had given our initial encounter. I am glad for it because otherwise I would have missed out on getting to know a very unique, interesting, loving, and warm family man with an exterior layer of bristles meant to keep him safe from anyone that might hurt him, and who endured more pain in one day than some experienced in a year. Fly high, free of pain at last, know that we will meet again one day and discuss that fishing rod incident once again. Love and support Vickie, Cass and all of Dan’s friends and family that feel the loss of Uncle Dip Dip.
