My deepest condolences to Anne and Family. Wilbert boarded at my Grandma's (Mary Gauvreau) house while he was attending medical school. I fondly remember sitting across from him at the dinner table, when I visited my Grandma. I also remember meeting him and Anne when they visited my Grandma once. I recall that he marveled at how much I looked like my Dad, Evan Macaulay. Since I have lived in the Edmonton area for the past almost 40 years, I don't often receive news from my family members in Ottawa and I was not told of Wilbert's passing in April. I just happened to think of him this morning and Googled his name, only to learn of his passing. I am so sorry. Best regards, Jean Kot

Dear Anne and Family,
Donna and I send our deepest sympathy and condolences. The city of Ottawa and the whole of Canada has lost a great innovator, physician and statesman. Willie Keon, not only founded the The Heart Institute but had the leadership skill, dedication, energy and charisma to sustain The Institute as a centre of cardiovascular excellence for 28 years. The Institute became an icon in Ottawa, Ontario and across Canada. For more than a decade he was also a Senator serving his country as well as The Institute. He loved Ottawa as they loved him. Willie had physically, emotionally or mentally touched so many individuals in Ottawa that he had become a greater icon than The Institute. During my 10 years as President, Willie was always supportive and enjoyed keeping abreast of major happenings at The Institute. His sense of obligation and responsibility for the Institute remained with him to the very end.
It was truly a great privilege and honour to attempt to follow in his footsteps.
Again, Donna and I express our deepest sympathy.

Mrs Keon & family,
I had the privilege of working at the Heart Institute with this very talented man for 15 years. What was truly inspiring was the culture he created both inside the building and in the community at large. No fund raising event was too small for him not to show up and pitch his support. Besides his obvious talents, that's what endeared him to so many....he mingled with the ordinary souls.
Please accept my condolences as you you grieve the loss of your dear Willie.

Hi Anne,
It was with great sadness that I heard that Willy had died at age 83.
I have known Willy since our MGH Days. In 1965-1966 the three Chief Residents in Generalities Surgery were Willy Keon, Gerry Pearl, and John Moffat.
Willy was highly intelligent, a great technical Surgeon, and highly competitive. On the first day of our Chief Residency he said to me that this year will be “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth” !
In July 1966, Willy trained for 2 years in Cardiac Surgery under Dr Wilfred Bigelow at the TGH—and I went on Active Staff in General Surgery at the TGH for 2 years.
On Willy’s 1st day, Dr Bigelow told Willy to go and watch his outgoing Chief Resident do a tracheostomy. When Dr Bigelow again saw Willy, he asked if that was the way they did tracheostomies in Montreal. Willy responded “No Sir—we did them better, and we did them faster” !
Willy had a couple of gallbladder attacks, and was in need of a cholecystectomy, and wanted me to do it. Dr Bigelow intervened and suggested that he have it done by one of the established TGH Surgeons. Willy said he wanted it done by an MGH Surgeon, specifically John Moffat. The operation went well, and he was back to work in short order,
Again, my condolences to you Anne, and your family.
John Moffat.

Mrs Keon, family and friends, please accept my condolences for the loss of Dr Keon, a remarkable man and an incredible doctor. I babysat for you a few times in 1967-8, when I was a student nurse at TGH in Toronto, when he was at Toronto Children’s hospital, just before you went to Boston. Dr Keon told me of his plan to go back to Ottawa in a couple of years and start the heart institute. Just after I finished nursing school and moved back to Ottawa in 1970, I was so pleased that he was able to follow through and open such a wonderful facility. It has been so important to our community and to so many people over the years. Thank you!

We wish to express our deepest sympathies to you, Mrs. Keon, and your family. Our son Jeffrey received a heart transplant at the tender age of six weeks at the Heart Institute . Dr. Keon had to rush from his daughter's recital in Montreal to perform the transplant in September of 1989. We will celebrate Jeffrey's 30th birthday this year and we have Dr. Keon to thank for our miracle. We remember standing before the operating room doors holding hands while Dr. Keon started praying and asking God to work through his hands and those of his team. Mrs. Keon, we would like to thank you and your children for the sacrifices you made throughout Dr. Keon's tenure as a surgeon because we understand the time that was taken away from you and your family. We also wanted you to know that our son has grown up to be a wonderful and thoughtful man thanks to your husband's tender and giving hands. Please accept my humble condolences for your family's loss of a man my wife Gail and I viewed as our personal hero.
Our Ottawa Citizen confirmed the sad news of Dr Wilbert Keon's passing, that we learned about over the airwaves on the weekend. Had he not rebuilt his heart in 1975, our then five-year-old son Colin, wouldn't be with us today, an exemplary citizen of the world. So the loss of Dr Keon hits pretty close to home for us. I have never encountered a workplace in which the staff so admired, almost worshipped, their boss. Nor have I ever met a man with so much quiet confidence as Dr Keon.
When Gail and I met with him in his office at the Ottawa Heart Institute in the summer of 1975, he used a model of a human heart to explain what had to be done and why, as well as the actual things he would do over the five-hour operation. He then asked if we had any questions. Gail said no, but I, rather sheepishly and as politely as I could, said something along the lines of the following:
"Well, we understand the operation has to be done; the diagnosis and prognosis has not varied, looking back from here, through the doctors in London, Ontario, to those in Dundee, Scotland immediately after his birth. I just wondered though, is this the best place for Colin to have this surgery?"
Completely unphased, Dr Keon eased back in his chair, appeared to think for what seemed an eternity, but was probably only a minute or two, before he answered:
"Well, I suppose you might do as well at the Mayo Clinic." He wasn't bragging, but simply stating a fact.
This happened before his fame as a heart surgeon had spread much beyond the Ottawa Valley. He knew his stuff. He also knew he was an excellent surgeon heading an equally fine team. A quiet man, he exuded an air of inspiring confidence. He will be so missed, but he has left such an amazing legacy.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of 'Willie' Keon. We served in the Senate together from the time of my appointment in 2005, till his retirement in 2010. I was Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science , and Technology and he was the Deputy Chair. We worked so well together you wouldn't know that we represented different political parties in the Upper Chamber. Willie wasn't interested in the politics of our work, his interest was in the good health and welfare of Canadians. We produced many good studies and reports with that objective in mind. I remember particularly his leading a study on Population Health.
His most noted achievements are as a cardiologist, but he also was an important contributor to the development of public policy in the Parliament of Canada. I often use him as an example of the kind of Senator we need more of.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Mrs. Keon and family,
All my sympathy for the loss of Dr Keon, whom I loved and admired. He told a funny story at the Heart Institute's 40th anniversary a few years ago of how we met in my office when I was the new Minister of NH&W and of the Medical Research Council. It was around 1976 and he needed funds for a building for the Heart Institute he had just officially opened. At one point, I told him: But you look like a kid! He replied: Madam Minister, I checked about you before coming and we are the same age! We could not fund buildings but my officials did find a way to contribute! Much later, as an academic by then, I had the honour and the pleasure to serve on his Board. I greatly admired his leadership. We owe to Willie Keon a world wide class health institution. I'll pray with you tomorrow but will not be able, recovering from surgery, to be at the Cathedral.

Willy and I go back to the early ‘60’s, when we were surgical residents together at the Montreal General Hospital - in the good old days! We spent five years sharing the same duty room and the same complaints from our wives about our 120 hour work week - burnout had not been invented yet.
Great and memorable times were spent together in the OR and at beer and oyster parties, with
Arnold M, John H, John M, Dave M, Tony P, Jerry I, and Rae B.
Six years ago we reconnected. I underwent an emergency life saving procedure at “ Willy’s hospital”.
He spent much time comforting me and my family during my convalescence, spending time walking the halls and reminiscing about our past.

Our heartfelt condolences for you, Anne, and the family.
In 1969, Yash Akurekli, Frank Tindal and I were one of Willie's first resident teams, if not his first. Those days were the start of some very amazing times for Ottawa as Willie pursued his quest to develop the OHI and to put Ottawa on the map as a center of Cardiac Research. We had many discussions over the three months. It was a privilege to work as part of the cardiac surgical team and, with Willie's encouragement, to go on to do an MSc at McGill focused on the positive effects of immediate cardiac revascularization after coronary artery blockage.
I have never forgotten Willie's kindness to his patients and staff - and I can personally attest to both aspects. On one occasion he even covered for me for a few hours one Saturday afternoon while Suzanne and I went to watch my brother-in-law play in a CFL game. About ten year's later (1979), I phoned Willie from Labrador to discuss a case of severe pericarditis in a local general surgeon - specifically myself. When I arrived by air evacuation, a few hours later, at the Civic, Willie met me and made sure I was in the capable hands of Don Beanlands.
Suzanne and I fondly remember being invited (I was a "lowly resident" at the time) for dinner when you lived in Alta Vista - it was a lovely evening. Few staff men ever considered their residents and their spouses in this way.
What a privilege it was to work with Willie in those really early days and to know him as a friend and colleague. Our thanks also to you and your family for your support of Willie's career and for sharing Willie with the world.
With many fond memories,
Ian and Suzanne Arnold

I am so sorry to hear that Dr, Keon had died, and would like to relay my deepest sympathies to Anne and his family. During my tenure at the Heart Institute Foundation, I had the privilege of working with him on occasion, and will never forget his kind, caring and down to earth nature. And I was never prouder to work at a place that was created by this brilliant man. Rest in peace Dr. Keon.

Prayers and sympathies to Anne and the Keon family at this time of Wilbert's passing. May God grant him a merciful judgment and reward for all his many good works. And may he grant peace and consolation to those who mourn his passing. I wish that I could be with you in person but promise to pray and offer a Mass for the above intentions down here on my sabbatical.

We are all saddened to learn of the passing of a community titan, Dr. Wilbert Keon.
First, my profound condolences to his entire family, including of course his incredibly devoted wife of 59 years, dear Anne.
I had the privilege of knowing the good doctor, and seeing him in action.
To the outsider he may have seemed like the quiet type, but inside him was a burning passion - for his patients, for the community at large.
That passion continues to save lives, as the Heart Institute, literally his baby, with its internationally accoladed expertise, has given thousands of people a new lease on life.
We are all the beneficiaries of Dr. Keon's vision, vigour, wisdom, and supreme dedication.
Dr. Keon has left us, but Dr. Keon continues to be with us, as his life saving legacy endures, and grows every day.
Rabbi Reuven P. Bulka

Sincere condolences to the Keon family on the loss of Wilbert. He was a great Canadian heart surgery pioneer who always had time for his patients. I am eternally grateful for the life-saving surgery he performed on my mother Dena which gave us 20 more precious years with her, as well as the great care she always received at the Heart Institute. You and he are in my thoughts and in my prayers at this difficult time of loss.

My heart is broken! Dr Keon saved my son Thomas 39 years ago, twice! He came to his first birthday and for that reason I thank you again. Your kindness surpasses your gift as a great surgeon.
My condolences to all your family.
From my family to yours. Nicole and Thomas White.
